Jewelry, especially diamonds, can be quite expensive, especially if you want a high-quality, beautiful product.

Let’s take a look at Zales, the company, so you can grasp their storied past and commitment to wonderful diamonds.

The Zales Military Discount Policy

Zales offers a 10% discount on purchases to members of the armed forces.

This discount is available right through the year, however, it’s not clear if it’s valid at all Zales stores or not, or if the discount will continue in future years.

Zales also offers exclusive military and service themed custom jewelry. Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force and even Coast Guard members and their families will appreciate these themed pendants, bracelets, watches, and more.

Outside of dedicated military discounts, Zales frequently offers sales of up to 50% off on select rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and other jewelry.

Does the Discount Work with Coupon Codes?

No, this discount doesn’t work with discount coupons. Also, the 10% discount is valid only on items that aren’t already discounted.

Other Ways to Save at Zales

Zales is known for offering great discounts and savings on quality diamonds and jewelry, but there are other ways to save on purchases. The Diamond Credit Card by Zales, Progressive Leasing Program, and Ten for Ten Layaway Plan are three examples of ways to save additional money when buying at Zales.

The Diamond Credit Card

The Diamond Credit Card by Zales lets you purchase jewelry from the online store or in-store and pay over a period of 6 months to 36 months.

There’s a minimum purchase level for which this offer is valid and there’s a minimum monthly payment requirement as well.

The credit card is offered in partnership with Comenity Capital Bank, which also decides the qualifications.

For purchases made under the financing plan, a transaction fee of $9.95 is added. You also get a $50 discount on your birthday and a 10% discount on any repair service. Shipping in the United States and US territories is free for all cardholders.

Besides this, you also get coupons, jewelry inspection reminders, and cleaning notifications at regular intervals during the year.

Progressive Leasing Program

Zales has another innovative program to make it easier for you to own your favorite piece of jewelry called progressive leasing.

This is essentially a no-credit-required purchase option or a lease-purchase option. You get the merchandise right away, but you actually own it after you’ve made all the required payments.

There’s an early buyout option as well. Once you apply for this, you are informed of your maximum card limit. The value of the merchandise you purchase needs to be within this limit. You can buy the item(s) at any Zales store and e-sign the lease agreement.

Pay the lease amount in flexible payments, 90-day payment option, or any of the early payout options.

Note that this program isn’t available in Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

In order to be eligible to apply for the lease-purchase program, you must be at least 18 years or older, should have a social security number, should have the routing and account number for a checking account that’s open and active, and either a credit card or debit card.

Ten for Ten Layaway Plan

Zales also has something called the Ten for Ten plan, which allows you to pay 10% of the price as a downpayment and the remaining amount in ten equal monthly payments.

However, this option is only available for purchases made at any of the Zales stores and not for online purchases.

Zales: A Quick Company History

The first Zales Jewelers retail store was opened in Wichita Falls, Texas back in 1924 by Morris Zale, William Zale, and Ben Lipshy.

The “a penny down and a dollar a week” credit plan offered by Zales was one of its kind and in less than two decades propelled them to open 12 Zales store across Texas and Oklahoma.

In 1946, Zales shifted its headquarters from Wichita to Dallas, within Texas. A little over a decade later, in 1957-58, Zales opened its first store in a shopping center and started trading its shares on the American Stock Exchange.

In the 1960s, the company branched into various other product categories such as shoes, sporting goods, furniture, pharmaceuticals and catalog stores and around the same time it was renamed as Zale Corporation.

By this time the company was growing at a breakneck speed and in the 1980s the Zale Corporation’s sales had crossed the $1 billion mark.

During this decade, the company went on an acquisition spree of sorts. It first acquired an 890-carat diamond, which was the world’s largest internally flawless diamond at the time, in 1984.

Five years later in 1989, Zales acquired Gordon’s Jewelers, which had a chain of 469 stores and was headquartered in Houston, Texas.

In 1985, the company once again shifted its headquarters, this time to Irving, which was also in Texas.

The first couple of years of the 1990s was a particularly difficult period for the company, which ended with the company filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1992.

However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the debt restructuring process significantly strengthened the company’s finances and in 1997, the company’s annual sales figure stood at over $1.3 billion.

By the end of the decade, the company was once again taking new strides. Its online store was launched in 1998 and across 1999-2000 the company acquired Peoples Jewellers of Canada and Piercing Pagoda.

Ever since the turn of the Millenium, Zales has been particularly focusing on expanding its e-commerce business. Zales launched in 2007 and in 2009 it launched

This continued into the current decade as well. The company launched an online platform specifically for Piercing Pagoda at and launched a multi-channel online shopping platform for Canadians at

Zales, which was purchased by specialty retail jeweler Signet Jewelers Inc. in 2014, today has 704 stores (as of February 3, 2018) across North America and Puerto Rico, making it one of the largest fine jewelers in the region.

Zales, which includes Zales Jewelers and Zales Outlet, accounted for 20% of Signet’s total sales in the fiscal year 2018.

It’s particularly known for its collection of diamond jewelry, which includes exclusive diamond designs from the likes of Vera Wang and Neil Lane. Zales’ association with Vera Wang began in 2012, with a diamond bridal jewelry collection known as the Vera Wang Love Collection.
